About RCRI

Rock Can Roll Independent is an artist-run, production-focused collective comprised of artists working in independent music, new media and performing arts. RCRI is the in-house production collective of The Independent Artists Cooperative. RCRI and the IAC are closely affiliated, both groups devoted to supporting independent practice and assisting with the production, presentation and disemmination of independent artists work. The IAC provides supports and services and RCRI produces events, recordings, media work.

The Independent Artists Cooperative was established in 2002 and have a history of providing free access community programming and low cost resources to a wide array of artists - from low rent rehearsal and studio space to free access technical and creative workshops series'. In 2004 seven IAC members formed the daughter collective Rock Can Roll Records which, in response to growing needs, soon became Rock Can Roll Records and Media. After a brief merging of the two entities in 2007 Rock Can Roll Independent became a separate entity from the Independent Artists Cooperative, though they remain closely affiliated.

Since 2004 RCRI have produced scores of live performances, audio recordings, screenings of film and video, live demonstrations and symposia. Every year, in collaboration with the IAC, RCRI produce the Annual Rock Can Roll Music and Media Festival in St. John's, Newfoundland. IAC and RCRI members have spawned many groups and programs including Rock School For Girls Series starting in 2003, by Liz Solo, Cherie Pyne and Rhiannon Thomas; the Graffiti Getaway Series facilitated by Montgomery Hall beginning in 2003 and the Rock Can Roll Independent Music and Media Festival, starting in 2004.

Documentation from our thrill-a-minute evolution will be posted here soon. Our first five years, especially our experiences with the City of St. John's, are also the subject of an upcoming feature length documentary - The Story of a House, to be released by RCRI in the Spring of 2008.
